Better Results – Less Bucks

Lisa and I had a great weekend. We went to see Jason Mraz in concert at Seattle’s Experience Music Project last Saturday.

Truth is, I’d never heard of Jason before, but by the end of the evening, I was hooked.

This guy (and his band) put on a great show. They were entertaining and really knew how to cater to their audience.

As a result, I went to the music store first thing this morning to get a copy of his latest CD.


There’s a huge business lesson in there somewhere.

When most business owners are asked who their ideal customer is, they typically reply, “Anyone who’s willing to buy what I’m selling”.

When someone first asked me this question, back when I owned the cleaning and restoration business, I thought the same thing.

I wanted to offer my services to anyone and everyone.

Only problem was, my advertising budget wouldn’t allow it.

Think about this for just a minute.

Would you rather:

1. Waste hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, trying to get your advertising message into the hands of as many folks as possible (many of whom won’t be the slightest bit interested in what you have to offer).


2. Invest just a small amount of money, and get your advertising message in front of ONLY those folks who were interested in exactly what you had to offer, at the precise moment in time they received your marketing message.

I don’t know about you, but I ALWAYS go for option #2.

Instead of spending huge amount of cashola, trying to reach thousands and thousands of people, you invest just a small amount to reach only those people who are predisposed to buy what you have to offer.

That’s why I love lead generation advertising.

You only spend time contacting those people who have raised their hand and shown you that they’re interested in what you have to offer.

Are You Carrying Buckets?

Back in 1999 I joined my first coaching group for small business owners.

At the time I joined, I had no idea how I’d ever be able to afford the monthly investment of $247.00 to be a part of this group.


In less than 4 months (as a direct result of my involvement in this group) I’d increased my income by more than $3,500.00 a month.

Talk about a great investment!

Because I was now bringing home so much more moolah, my membership in the group was essentially F-R-E-E.

A guy by the name of Jeff Smith was the coordinator of this particular group, and one of the first things he required us to do was read the book “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki.

In this book Robert gives the example of one guy carrying buckets to supply a town with water, while another (smarter guy) built a pipeline to carry the water.

While it took a little longer for the pipeline to be built, once it was done – the water would continue to flow… with or without him.

It brings up the question:

What are you doing?

Sadly, most folks are carrying buckets.

They’re getting paid based on the hours they work. Even if you’re a highly paid surgeon or attorney your income is still limited by the hours you can work.

In the past, we’ve all been taught to think that the harder we work, the more money we’ll make.

What if that theory was completely wrong?

Heck, I used to work my tail off as an Alaska Fisherman, and yeah, I made ok money, but my income was limited.

And, to make matters worse, if we didn’t catch anything, I’d be working my tail off… for nothing!

Think about this for a minute.

What if the smarter you worked, the more money you made?

Personally, I prefer to work once and get paid over and over and over again.

There’s lots of ways you can create recurring revenue for yourself. It could be via royalties from an invention, a song, or a book. It could be from network marketing. It could be from real estate. It could be dividends from investments. Or it could be from a multitude of other ways aside from the typical 9-to-5 grind.

The majority of my income day-in and day-out is a direct result of work I did 1, 2, 3…even 5+ years ago or more.

For instance, I set up the Get Mold Solutions project back in 2000.

I only did the work for this project one time, yet it now puts $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 a month into my bank account.

And now, I couldn’t turn off the flow of money if I tried.

Truth is, I’ve now become what most people would consider “lazy”.

Don’t get me wrong though. I’ve never had a problem with hard work.

For crying out loud, I spent 7 years working the most dangerous job in the world.

But here’s the deal…

I’ve discovered that the amount of money that gets put into your bank account, has absolutely NO correlation with the amount of hours you put in, or the amount of energy you exert.

And let me tell you, since learning this secret, I no longer have ANY aspirations to work hard.

After all, no one at my bank asks me how hard I worked to earn the money in my account.

No siree!

They just take my money without asking any questions.

When most folks discover how I make money, and how easily it flows into my bank account, they’re amazed.

Their immediate response was, “How can I get one of those Automatic Income Systems for myself”?

And before I even realized what happened, I found myself showing others how to they could do the same thing.

Only problem was, once my clients proved how easy it was to put $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 a month into their bank account, word started spreading like wildfire.

Just Get It Done, Without The Excuses

It’s hard to find a company that offers great customer service these days.

I went to Chicago to attend a seminar two weeks ago, and had made arrangements to have this local company pressure wash my driveway and patio while I was gone.

I return home only to find out that the job didn’t get done.

When I call the company, I get this “Well, we had a scheduling conflict and couldn’t make it to your home”.

The person on the phone then asks me when I’d like to re-schedule the job.

Are you kidding me?

I already had them scheduled to do the job.

Only problem is, they didn’t deliver.

And to make matters worse, they didn’t call Lisa or myself in advance to re-schedule, or even let us know that they wouldn’t be keeping the appointment.

And now…

They don’t even offer us so much as an apology.

Instead, they just make excuses, which is entirely unacceptable in my book.

But here’s what’s REALLY bad about this little story. Most of us have come to expect this kind of service.

That’s why we’re so shocked when a company actually follows through on their promises and delivers what they’re supposed to.

I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

Think back to the last time you were in a restaurant and got GREAT service.

It almost took you by surprise, didn’t it?

You see, setting yourself apart in today’s world of business incompetence is really easy.

All you gotta do is follow through on what you promise your customers. That’s it!


If you were to actually go so far as to over-deliver, and give your customers a little more than they expected, watch out!

You might just end up with a bunch of raving fans who will extol the virtues of your business to everyone they come in contact with.

Zip Yer Mouth and Open Yer Ears

People often ask how I’ve been able to excel in so many areas of life.

First as a business owner. Then as a published author, entrepreneur and public speaker.

Those who ask would also like to know how they can have the same kind of results in their own lives.

Truth is, the formula is incredibly easy, yet most will never figure it out.

And the reason…

Most folks look at what the masses are doing, and then follow suit.

Only problem is, the masses don’t have the right answers.

And that my friend is why most businesses fail.

I too made this mistake, before I knew any better.

Back in 1996, when I started my cleaning and restoration business, I immediately took note of what the competitors in my area were doing, and promptly did the same.

Little did I know at the time that this error in judgment was about to put me on the road to failure.

Had I not come to my senses, and sought the advice of a mentor (who was already massively successful in business), I would have been just another statistic. One of the 97% of business owners who fail each year.

Since learning this valuable lesson, I’ve now made it a point to follow winners, and ignore the masses.

I don’t listen to those who aren’t winning in the games of business and life, nor do I take advice from ANYONE who knows less than me on a given subject.

I constantly surround myself by people who know more than me. I then zip my mouth, open my ears and take in all that I can.

In fact…

I recently returned home from Chicago, where I attended a huge marketing and money-making seminar, and the strategies I discovered are certain to increase my income three-fold in the coming year.

While there were several hundred folks who attended the same event, only a handful will have such dramatic results in their own businesses.


Because they don’t follow the simple advice I just shared with you.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s natural for us to want to share our knowledge with others.

As a successful business owner, coach, mentor and public speaker, I’m paid to give advice. But let me assure you, it’s a very humbling experience.

And while I offer my thoughts via emails, blogs, courses, coaching programs and live events, I never try to impress others by showing them how smart I am.

Truth is, I’m nothing special.

And I haven’t accomplished anything that you can’t do as well.

I do have a burning desire to show others how to improve their lifestyle by sharing what I’ve discovered over the last several years – but ONLY when they ask for help.

And even then, I spend a considerable amount of my time listening to THEIR questions, comments and concerns, and very little time speaking.

Yet much is accomplished using this method, and lives are forever changed.

They Shoulda Used A System

I was talking with my good friend Chet the other day, and I couldn’t believe the story he told me.

If you’ve been a subscriber for any period of time, you’ve heard me speak of Chet.

Chet’s the one who first introduced me to the concept of Automatic Income, back in 2001.

As it turns out, Chet hired a few guys to come over and pressure clean the outside of his home, as well as the driveway, patio, deck, and even his dock.

You see, in Florida, because it’s sunny, warm and humid most of the time, it creates ideal conditions for dirty slimy bacteria, fungus, and all sorts of algae to grow on almost everything you own.

In Chet’s case, because he lives on a lake, he has to stay on top of things even more. Since there’s so much greenery and wildlife around his home, keeping things maintained can seem like a full-time job at times.

As it turns out, the guys who cleaned Chet’s home didn’t bother spraying off all the walls after they’d pressure cleaned the floors, so the walls were covered with all the dirt they blew off the ground.

Nor did they consider the fact that water actually gets inside and underneath doorways, so Chet’s home was flooded in several places.

After returning home and discovering the mess these guys left behind, Chet wasn’t too happy. After all, they did a really sloppy job.

As a successful business-owner, it took Chet about 3 seconds to pinpoint exactly what the problem was: These guys did NOT have an organized way for getting the job done.

Meaning, they had no SYSTEM in place… to make sure the job was done right, from cleaning to clean-up.

You see, the most important thing Chet ever taught me is that the MOST effective and efficient way of doing things requires the use a system.
