It Should Work, But It Doesn’t – Why?

Have you ever had a business idea that you knew would make a fortune, then wondered why it didn’t… even though, according to conventional wisdom, it “should” have been a huge money-maker?

The answer lies in understanding how business REALLY works, rather than how most people think it “should” work.

You see…

When most people start a business of their own for the first time, the first thing they consider is the product or service they’ll sell.

Only problem is, when you begin thinking this way, you’re doomed to failure from the very beginning.

Instead, you need to look at what people “already want”.

And, when you give people what they “already want”, they’ll come flocking in droves, ready to buy what you have to offer.

So, how do you find out what people want?

Truth is, it’s really easy.

Here’s a story that will explain what I’m talking about.

As you know, my wife Lisa and I met a little over three years ago.

In that time, Lisa has watched my own businesses grow, to the point where we no longer have to worry about finances.

Don’t Think So Hard

Earlier this year I reread the book “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.

Though I’d read this particular book many years prior, it was as if I was reading it for the first time.


The answer is simple.

Over the last several years I’d experienced many things that put me in a much better position to benefit from the incredible secrets in this book.

The biggest accomplishment being the fact that I now own a massively successful business, and therefore, have a vehicle in which to apply all the secrets Mr. Hill reveals.

The biggest “ah-ha” I got from the book was this: After interviewing more than 25,000 men and women who had experienced failure, they disclosed the fact that “lack of decision” topped the list as the major cause of their failure.

To make things even more interesting…

After interviewing several hundred people who had accumulated fortunes well beyond the million-dollar mark, every one of them had the habit of making decisions FAST.

Talk about an eye-opening revelation.

And my own experiences have now proven this to be true.

Back in 1997, shortly after I started the cleaning and restoration business, a gentleman by the name of Joe Polish introduced me to some radical new marketing strategies that he’d been using in his own business.

And though he’d already proven that they worked like gangbusters, I was slow to make the decision to use them for myself.

As a result, I lost out on a ton of money that I could’ve made.

When I finally made the decision to take Joe’s advice and apply his strategies, my business flourished, well beyond my wildest imaginations.

That experience taught me a valuable lesson, and ever since, I’ve been FAST to make decisions, in ALL areas of my life.

And the funny thing…

Whenever I make decisions quickly, they prove to be right 99% of the time.

But, just as Mr. Hill had proven in “Think & Grow Rich”, When I stew about a decision and think, think, think about it – I’m not really thinking at all. In fact, I’m preparing myself for what will most likely be a dumb decision.

The message is clear: Trust your internal instincts. Believe in that initial gut reaction or feeling you have about something. Chances are 99% that what you think will be the right answer.

Fortune Favors The Bold

Before I get into today’s post, I’ve got something exciting to tell you about.

I just got through updating this blog.

Here’s today’s Automatic Income Tip:

I’ve always loved the saying, “Fortune favors the bold.” My good friend (and marketing genius), John Alanis tells me that this saying was probably attributed to Julius Caesar, but it may even predate him.

There’s another version of it I like even better, and I heard this one from Brian Tracey: “Act boldly and unseen forces will come to your aid.”

In my experience, both of these statements are absolutely true.

For example…

A couple years ago, I was down in Tampa visiting my friend Chet for a week.

During the course of my visit, Chet and I got to talking about where I saw myself in the next few years.

During the course of this conversation, I discovered that the cleaning and restoration business I owned at the time, did NOT fit into my future plans.

To make a long story short, I decided right then and there, to sell the business.

Was that a bold decision?

You bet it was!

Was I a little bit nervous?

Once again, the answer would be yes.

But Chet reminded me of what Brian Tracey said, “Act boldly and unseen forces will come to your aid.”

And that’s exactly what happened.

Within two days of returning home from Tampa, out of the blue, I get a call from this business broker, asking me if I’d ever thought of selling my business.

Apparently, he had a client from San Jose, California who wanted to relocate to the Seattle area, and he was looking to buy a cleaning and restoration business.

Within two months the sale of the business was complete, and on April 19, 2004 I essentially retired from manual labor… forever!

Now, you could say this was a fluke, or a coincidence, but you would be wrong.

This kind of thing has happened too many times.

I could tell you story, after story, after story of similar goings on (and I will in future posts).

But suffice it to say, whenever I’ve taken bold action, I’ve gotten big results.

But why does this happen… and how does it apply to succeeding in business?

Most folks are incredibly timid, in all areas of their life.

And truth is, I used to be pretty timid as well.

But here’s the deal:

Bold action, by its very nature is sure to attract attention.

The quality of boldness is very attractive and it’s often been said that, “People love a winner.”

One of the big qualities of winners is bold action, and people are attracted to winners.

When you start taking bold action, you attract people who want to be a part of what you’re doing.


So few people act boldly, and when you do, you’ll stand out and get noticed.

When others see you act boldly, they want to live vicariously through you.


Don’t confuse boldness with stupidity. I’ve known folks who did stupid things boldly–and gotten the results they deserve. Bold action should only be taken with good preparation, backed up by tested, proven knowledge and support.

When you chose the area you want to apply action to, when you prepare diligently, you must act boldly and decisively when the opportunity presents itself.

The more bold action you take, the more opportunity will come your way… it’s an amazing “self feeding” mechanism.

So, prepare diligently, and act boldly– unseen forces will come to your aid… delivering the outcome you want!

The 5 Things I Love About My Kids

I married my beautiful wife Lisa on August 20th of last year.

As you probably know, I had been married before, but when I wanted to start my first business back in 1996, my wife at the time wanted nothing to do with it.


She filed for divorce and left me.

This made for a pretty rocky start – getting my first business venture off the ground (which was a cleaning and restoration company).

Thankfully I found the help I needed, and the business grew to be an incredible success.

But here’s what you may not know.

As a result of my first wife leaving me, I was devastated!

For years, I my self esteem was more than low. In fact, it was pretty much non-existent.

I actually thought that I’d never find that special woman who I could share the rest of my life with.

But you know what?

I was wrong!

After almost 8 years of being single, my brother introduced me to Lisa, who was his neighbor at the time.

As a result of meeting this incredible woman, and her 4 beautiful children, my life is now complete and I feel like the luckiest guy in the world.

And who would’ve thought that being a father to Lisa’s four children would be so AWESOME!

As a single mom, she did an incredible job of raising these kids, and now that I’m a part of their lives, I’ve gained so much.

Here’s the 5 things I love about my kids:

1. I love my kids because they’re happy most of the time.

2. I love my kids because they love learning – and they’re coachable.

3. I love my kids because they’re not afraid to show their true feelings and emotions

4. I love my kids because they’re not afraid to fail, and they go after what they want

5. But above all, I love my kids because they’re a reminder of the young person that’s inside all of us – a reminder of the person who came into the world to succeed, a reminder that we can achieve anything we set our mind to.

We sure can learn a lot from our kids, can’t we.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that we can’t forget about the kid inside ourselves.

We all have this kid inside of us that’s just dying to show their emotions and feelings, to go after everything they want in life, that refuses to accept the word “no”.

All you have to do is, allow the kid within to make the connection with the BIG YOU.
