If You Build It…

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Last Friday night at the Thompson home, it was movie night for Lisa and I.

It’s not often that my wife and I get quiet evenings at home, and you can be sure we cherish them when they come along.

Kaitlynn had gone to a friend’s for the evening, Brock was in bed, and we decided to watch Field Of Dreams, the 1989 hit baseball movie with Kevin Costner.

The most famous line from that movie was, “If you build it, he will come”.

But…

There’s another line from the movie, and though it didn’t go down in the history books, it made one heck of an impression on me.

It’s the opening line in the video above.

As I sat watching the movie, I realized how closely it resembled my own life.

I can remember years ago, and how most people reacted when I told them of my plans to start a business of my own.

I had a vision of what I wanted to accomplish, how I wanted to interact with others, and what I wanted my life to be like, yet at times, I felt like I was the only one who could see the vision.

Many ridiculed me, calling me crazy for having such grandiose dreams.

In spite of this, I kept pushing forward, moving toward them.

As we fast forward to now, every one of them have become a reality, and today I’m reaching for even bigger dreams.

Maybe you’ve been ridiculed too.

Maybe people have called you crazy.

Maybe you’ve felt alone at times.

Well…

I’m here to tell you – you’re NOT alone, because I’m in the same boat with you.

And there’s one thing I can tell you.

The secret that got me to where I am, has been surrounding myself with like-minded people who shared my enthusiasm and passion.

Who didn’t think I was crazy.

Who could help me achieve my dreams.

In fact, that’s the biggest reason I do what I do, and why I love it so much.

Because I now have the opportunity to help you, just as so many others have helped me along the way.

I don’t know about you, but me thinks that’s a great thing to aspire to.

Stuck In Airport Limbo

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

This story will prove the point that price is not always the most important factor when making a buying decision.

Lisa was up at 4:00 Tuesday morning so she could make the 8-hour round trip and rescue our oldest son Jerry from the Portland airport.

He and his friend Chris went to Las Vegas over the Holidays, and on their way home, they got stuck in airport limbo land for 3 days.

Last Thursday, they were on Cloud 9 as they boarded the Southwest Airlines flight to Vegas.

What made this trip extra special was the fact that they’d got a couple of “buddy pass” tickets at no charge, courtesy of Jerry’s aunt, who works for Southwest.

Everything seemed great on the surface, and the guys had a great time in Vegas.

But…

On Saturday evening, when it came time to fly home, things started to get ugly.

The “no cost” airline tickets they got only allowed them to fly stand-by.

Meaning that, you can only get on the plane if there’s available seats.

As you can imagine, the flights were completely full, as everyone was exiting Las Vegas, and returning back home after the holidays.

Jerry and Chris spent the night at the airport, hoping to catch a flight on Sunday.

Morning came, and went.

They didn’t get out.

Afternoon came, and went.

They didn’t get out.

Finally, in the evening, they were able to get on a flight.

Only challenge… it was talking them to Sacramento.

But hey, at least that’s a little closer to home.

Upon arriving in Sacramento, they were faced with a similar situation – no open seats.

Once again, they spent the night in the airport, hoping to catch a flight home on Monday.

They spent the entire day in the airport, with no luck.

The last flight heading north for the day was at 8:20pm.

They were hoping to get on that flight, but it didn’t happen.

Once again, they had to stay the night at the airport.

They were finally able to catch the 7:00am flight on Tuesday, but it would only take them to Portland, which is about 230 miles away from us.

Rather than deal with this anymore, Lisa and I decided it best to make the drive to Portland, and pick the boys up.

I have to say though, they had a pretty good attitude throughout the whole experience.

But even at that, neither of them are excited about flying on a “buddy pass” again.

At least not during a busy holiday time.

When you consider the fact that each of the boys lost a couple days of work, and you take into account the time and expense of driving to Portland and back, it makes you realize that simply paying for the tickets would have been a much better deal.

I realize there’s nothing you can do to change the facts.

There’s a small amount of the population who makes EVERY buying decision based on price.

For these people, the cheaper, the better.

But people like you and I would rather get value in return for what we spend.

Value is described as, “What I’m getting in return, is worth more to me than the price I’m paying to get it”.

And as long as we get this value, we’re happy.

We feel like we got a great deal, and we should.

We DID get a great deal.

I look at every buying decision this way.

By asking myself, “Is what I’m getting, worth more to me than the price I’m paying to get it”?

If the answer is no, I don’t make the investment.

But…

If the answer is yes, I move forward immediately, without any hesitation.

This way of thinking has served me extremely well over the years, and it will do the same for you.

2010 Predictions Run Amuck

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Here it is, Tuesday – January 5, 2010.

I’ve been laying low for the last 14 days and spending quality time with my family over the Holidays.

I have to admit, during that entire time I only checked my email a couple times.

But…

Upon viewing it this morning, my inbox is awash with countless predictions for 2010.

Most of these predictions are talking about Google, Facebook, Twitter, IPhones, Apple Tablets and how all this technology will affect us in 2010 and beyond.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of technology.

Technology is what allows us to have mostly automated businesses that pay us for doing what we love.

If it weren’t for technology, I wouldn’t have the lifestyle I now get to live. And neither would many others.

But…

That being said, having technology, without a definite purpose for using it, is completely worthless.

Just as getting into business solely to make a buck is a sure-fire path to failure.

For years, the “so called gurus” have been teaching us to find an easily reachable niche group of people with a problem, solve that problem for them, and sell them the solution.

This has been the business model for many years now.

And it’s the very reason most businesses fail.

Simply finding a problem, and solving that problem for a group of people is NOT a viable business model.

Sure, it might make you a few bucks, but it ain’t gonna get you where you really want to go in life.

In order to have the business and lifestyle of your dreams, you need more than that.

For starters, you’d better dang well be passionate about what you have to offer.

If you’re not passionate about helping others, then you have little chance of succeeding in a business of your own.

Secondly, you’d better truly care about the people who come to your for help.

If your sole driving motivation is to make a buck, and you don’t even have compassion for those who come to you for help, you won’t be in business for long.

So…

Here’s MY prediction for 2010.

The success you have will be directly in alignment with the level of passion you have for what you’re doing, and the amount of compassion you have for the people who come to you for help.

Beyond that, everything else is secondary.

The greatest technology in the world won’t help if your intentions aren’t genuine.

But, when you combine passion with compassion, you’ll be unstoppable.
