Imitating Success

Monday, November 29th, 2010

It’s long been said… if you want to learn how to do anything, all you need to do is find someone who’s already successful at what you want to accomplish, and then do what they’ve done.

This applies to everything.

Business, relationships, technical skills… EVERYTHING.

We love going to our high school football games, and the video above shows the pre-game activities.

You’ll also notice my two-year old son Brock, intently watching what’s going on.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but he was preparing to imitate what he was seeing.

And he was going to imitate something very specific.

Any ideas on what it was?

I’ll be back soon with the video from the morning after, so you can see how a two-year old imitates success.

My Time Guarding Secret

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

I want to congratulate all of you who took the time to respond and share your best time guarding secrets.

There were some great posts, and anyone who reads these threads in the future is going to get some great value.

And that’s what this is all about – creating value.

I promised to share my biggest time guarding secret with you as well, so here it is.

On any given day, I schedule no more than 2-3 key tasks that I want to get done.

At least one of these tasks will usually be something that will directly generate income for my business.

I then allot a certain amount of time for each task, meaning that I assign both a start time, AND an end time.

For example, if I’m going to write an email or blog post, I’ll typically allot 20-25 minutes to get the task done.

If I didn’t assign and end time as well, it would take me much longer to get the task done.

It’s funny how our mind works.

When we know that we need to be done with a task by a certain time, our mind gets extremely focused so we can make it happen.

And…

Even if I’m not able to complete a task in the allotted time, I’ll quit if necessary, so I can move onto the next task.

I’ll then come back and finish the uncompleted task on another day.

I’ve been using this secret for a long time now, and it works like crazy.

It’s this secret that gives me the luxury of only working 2-5 hours a day, and feeling GOOD about it.

After all, the number one, most important thing in my life is my family.

They’re the reason I do what I do.

So what good would it do for me to work a ton of hours every day?

That would be completely incongruent with my values.

Be sure to let me know if you found this valuable.

You can post your comments below.

Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday.

Guarding Your Time

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Every day, we’re given countless choices on how we can use our time.

Each one of us has the same 24 hours in a day, yet some people are able to use it much more effectively than others.

How is that?

How is it that some people seem to get so much done, while others struggle to get anything done at all?

It really comes down to one simple solution.

Guarding your time.

Other than my virtual assistant (who lives in Texas), I’m a one-man show, running a Millyun+ yearly business, from the comfort of my own home.

And… I only work 2-5 hours a day.

I can assure you this wouldn’t be possible if I didn’t place high value on my time.

And I’ve got to say, my secret to managing my time is actually quite simple.

But…

Instead of just telling you my secret, I want to get some interaction going here.

I want to hear from you.

I want you to tell me your best time-guarding or time-managing secret.

As you know, I need to know that you’re getting value from my emails and blog posts.

And the only way I know that, is when you respond to me.

If all I did was send my content out into cyberspace, and never got any feedback from you, I’d probably call it a day – because what would be the point of doing what I do, if no one’s getting any value from it.

So…

With that said, give me your feedback below, by telling me your best time management secret.

I’ll then be back to return the favor, by telling you mine.

Talk with you then.

Because You Asked

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

I got an email a couple days ago, from a gentleman that I met a few weeks ago at Joe Polish’s seminar for the cleaning industry, and he asked me quite the personal question.

“Kevin, I know you’re really big on family. So if you don’t mind me asking, how much of a role has your wife and children played in the success of your business”?

Since he asked, I’ve decided to take the time to respond.

It’s funny that you’d ask me this question today, as last night Lisa and I were having a conversation, and I was telling her that I wouldn’t be nearly as successful as I am, had I not met her.

Now don’t get me wrong, I was successful by many people’s standards, even before I met Lisa in 2003.

But by my own standards (and those are the only ones that matter), I had a long ways to go.

And truth is, I still have a long ways to go.

That’s because I view myself as continually learning new things, and continually growing as a person.

But I can also tell you this…

Meeting Lisa caused me to mature a lot quicker, even though she might not agree that I’m that mature, even to this day.

Making the decision to marry Lisa, become an instant father to her four awesome kids, and then have two more children together, has put things in a whole new perspective for me.

Because the fact is, everything I do is for my family.

So our two smallest children, Brock and Elliana never have to find out what it’s like to attend daycare.

So Kaitlynn, who’s the only one of the older kids still living at home, can have a role model in her life,

So that the other kids know that their mom is with a man who would do anything for her.

So that Lisa knows, without a doubt, that I love her with all of my heart and soul.

And yes, it makes me feel really good to know that I’m able to provide a nice lifestyle for them.

We live in a nice home, drive nice vehicles, take nice vacations and all that.

But the fact is, that’s all just stuff.

And it’s not what motivates me to do what I do for my family.

What motivates me is simply knowing that Lisa and the other kids appreciate me.

And I see a reminder of that every day.

It’s a sign that hangs right over my desk, and it reads “For My Family”.

The kids made it for me a few years back, and gave it to me for Christmas.

So the answer to your question is a resounding yes.

Lisa and the kids have played a huge role in the success of my business.

So let me ask you…

What motivates you?

What’s played a huge role in getting you to where you are today?

What’s going to motivate you moving forward from here?

While the answers will be different for all of us, the end result will be the same.

In the end, we’ll experience the success we want and deserve.

Me & Sir Richard Branson

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Since last week’s email, many of you have been asking if I got to meet Sir Richard Branson.

As you can see by the photo above… the answer is yes.

Last Thursday night was the big Rock The Kasbah event in Los Angeles, and as fate would have it, I was invited.

Being from the little town of Arlington, Washington, this was a pretty big deal for me.

And I have to tell you, it was really humbling to be part of such an event.

The purpose of this event was to raise money for Virgin Unite, which is Richard’s foundation.

The goal was $500,000.00.

Before the event really even got started, Richard stood at the podium, as he attempted to hold back any tears, and made the announcement that an anonymous donor had just handed him a check for the complete $500,000.00.

I don’t know the exact figure, but I can tell you that by the time the evening was over, well over One Million Dollars had been raised.

It was an incredible (yet humbling) feeling to be a part of such an incredible event.

Since getting home, I’ve already been talking with Lisa and the kids about it.

I look forward to the day when we too will be able to use our foundation to do things on this kind of scale.

And yes, you can be sure it will happen.

Because where there’s a powerful intention, there’s a way to make it happen.

This is true for ALL areas of our lives.

Rocking The Kasbah

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

As you’re reading this, I’m preparing to board an airplane bound for Los Angeles, so I can attend Richard and Eve Branson’s Rock The Kasbah fundraiser for Virgin Unite, which is Richard’s foundation.

Because my good friend Joe Polish knows Richard personally and also knows that I own a family foundation, he invited me to attend this unique event.

That’s Joe and Richard in the photo above. It was taken for Life Magazine.

It’s my first time doing anything like this, so I have no idea what to expect.

But…

I’ll be sure to give you an update afterwards.

As you can imagine, I’m pretty excited, and honored, to have been invited.

My invitation said that there’s no cameras allowed, but hopefully I’ll be able to sneak some photos to share with you.

Who knows… maybe I’ll even be able to get a photo with Richard Branson.

That would be pretty awesome.

I’ll let you know if it happens.

You Gotta Give To Get

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Ever since I was a little boy, my parents taught me the importance of being generous.

And because I was raised in the church, I also learned the concept of tithing.

When it comes to running my business, these childhood lessons have served me extremely well.

Because the fact is, if you expect to prosper in business, you’ve got to be generous.

In short, you’ve gotta give if you expect to get.

But here’s the real secret…

When you give, you’ve got to do it without expecting to get anything in return.

I’ll share another childhood experience with you in order to explain what I’m talking about.

I remember being in church, probably around the age of 11, when I heard the pastor give a sermon on tithing.

He was telling the congregation that when you tithe, it will come back to you 10-fold.

Problem was, he was suggesting that you should give in order to get, and even as a youngster, this didn’t seem right to me.

Here’s the big secret that you’ve got to understand.

Yes, you have to give if you want to get, but the secret is in giving without expecting to get anything in return.

And that applies to all kinds of giving, whether it’s giving of your time, giving of your expertise, giving of your finances or anything else you may choose to give.

When it comes to business, this concept plays a HUGE role.

I can’t begin to tell you how blessed I’ve been, simply because I made the decision to be generous, and give of myself.

In 2008, we took things to a whole new level, by starting the Thompson Family Foundation.

Here it is less than two years later, and an interesting dynamic has taken place.

I’m now using my business to fund the family foundation, so that we can have a positive impact on even more people.

Talk about an incredible feeling.

When you get to a place where you feel that your entire purpose for living is to give back to other people, an amazing thing happens.

It seems as though the people, the resources, the finances and everything else you need seem to magically get delivered to your doorstep.

Now…

Am I suggesting that you do the same things I’ve done?

Absolutely not.

But I certainly recommend that you be generous in both your personal and business dealings.

Give it a try.

It will make your day, and it will make someone else’s day too.

And I can tell you that the concept is true. When you give (without expecting anything In return), it does come back to you 10-fold.

I’m living proof of that.

Maybe you are too.

If so, be sure to share one of your own experiences below.

Election 2010 Results

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Yesterday’s blog post resulted in quite the heated discussion.

If you missed it, definitely go check it out.

Some people publicly cautioned me against talking politics, and even more cautioned me in private, by sending me emails.

But…

What’s interesting to note, is that I wasn’t talking politics.

You were.

Well… maybe not you personally, but everyone who took the time to come post their comments.

The number was large – very large – and you had extremely strong feelings about your convictions.

Like I said, if you didn’t get in on the discussion, be sure to see the blog.

The one thing this discussion brought to light was the fact that we all agree on one thing.

And that one thing is this…

We can NOT rely on government to take care of us.

Instead, we must take control of our own financial future, and put the power where it belongs, which is in our own hands.

The great news is, we’re in a time period where consumers are looking for someone they can believe in.

It makes absolutely no difference what products you sell.

In order to sell anything, it’s going to require that you be that person they can believe in.

That person they feel a connection with.

That person they naturally WANT to spend their dollars with.

And yes, you have complete control over that.

You can be that person, if you so desire.

The only question is…

Will you be that person?

If you’re up for the challenge, post your reply below.
