For the last several months I’ve been dealing with, and shattering some of my limiting beliefs.
Yes… I have to deal with stuff like that too, just like everyone else.
Fortunately, I’m surrounded by people who really care about me, and are willing to give me the “straight scoop” when I need to hear it.
And… more importantly… I’m open to making changes in my life that will better serve me.
We ALL have limiting beliefs, yet most of us don’t even realize it.
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.
Not too long ago a friend told me a story from his past, when he was in 2nd grade.
The teacher had he and the rest of the kids sitting in a circle, and each of them would take a turn at reading a book.
When the book was passed to my friend, and it was his turn to read, he struggled with a few of the words.
As we all know, when kids are learning to read, this is quite common.
But… as my friend struggled a little bit, a couple girls sitting next to him began to snicker.
They then said, “You sure are stupid because you can’t read”.
The effect that one comment had on my friend was incredible.
For the next 27 years he carried with him the belief that he was stupid.
All because of one comment from a couple girls in 2nd grade.
Fortunately, he was at a seminar where the subject of limiting beliefs was being addressed, and once he realized what had happened, he was able to make the necessary changes in his thought pattern.
Here’s another example. This one comes from my own life.
If you’ve been with me for any period of time, you know that I used to own a carpet cleaning business, and that business had grown to the point where I’d hired employees to help me get all the work done.
My experience at hiring employees was definitely less than favorable, so when I sold that business, I vowed to NEVER have employees again.
That limiting belief, that employees are a bad thing, has been with me since 1999.
Even with it in place, I’ve been able to build my current business to the level it’s at.
But…
I’ve now hit a ceiling in my business, and in order to break through it, I’ve been forced to deal with my limiting beliefs about employees.
Fortunately, my vision for the business has been expanded, and as you may know, I’m on a mission to introduce 1 Million people to the fact that they really can have a business that fits in with, and funds the kind of life they truly want to have.
This vision could not become a reality with my current belief system regarding employees in place.
Because I’m so motivated by this vision, it forced me to look at the limiting beliefs that were standing in my way, and change them.
With that said, I wanted to share this list of 25 limiting beliefs I found as I was doing some personal research.
In sharing them, I wanted to do a little exercise.
Maybe you’ve got some of these limiting beliefs (or others that aren’t on the list).
If so, try to think back to the point in time that the belief came into being for you, and what were the circumstances.
When you do this, it causes you to question some of those beliefs.
Here’s the list. Take a look at it, and see if any of them relate to you. I’ll then close out by letting you know how to shatter your limiting beliefs.
1. It’s not safe; I need to stay safe
2. I’m now worthy, good enough, lovable enough
3. I don’t deserve good things
4. Something terrible will happen
5. It’s greedy to want more
6. More for me means less for others
7. Others will resent me, be jealous
8. Others won’t approve of me, will criticize me, judge me
9. I need other’s approval
10. It’s not safe to shine, to stand out
11. I need to struggle; life has to be a struggle
12. I am a victim
13. I am a martyr
14. I am a savior
15. I need to take care of everyone else before me
16. I can do it better than anyone
17. I need to work hard
18. I can’t change
19. I’m too old; I’m too young
20. I missed my chance, it’s too late for me
21. The economy is bad; it’s not the right time
22. I don’t have the necessary resources – money, time, intelligence, training,
credentials, creativity, help, friends, family, etc.
23. I’m too screwed up by my past and I can’t get over it
24. I can’t do hard things
25. Failure is shameful
So…
Did you recognize any of these limiting beliefs from your own life?
If so, would you agree that they’re standing in the way of you getting to where you want to be in life?
Are they holding you back?
Now that you realize what’s going on, doesn’t it make you just a little bit angry?
I hope so, because that’s the first step to doing something about them.
The next step is to replace the limiting with a non-limiting belief.
In my own situation, I began looking at other business owners I knew who had GREAT employees. Employees who had been with them for a LONG time.
I then told myself, “If they can have great employees who are excited to be involved with their business, so can I”.
By replacing my limiting belief with one that served me better, I was able to find a gal that’s now been helping me grow this business so I can continue on with my mission.
We’re 3 months into the process, and I’m wishing that I hired her a long time ago.
So…
What’s one of your limiting beliefs, and what are you going to replace it with?
I’d love to her from you, and know that I’ve made a positive impact on your life today.
