It’s a question we’ve all heard before, but how much thought or attention do we really give it?

And have we made any significant changes in our life as a result of pondering this question?

This morning my wife Lisa insisted that I watch this 22-Minute video.

“22 Minutes!!”, I exclaimed!

“You need to watch it”, was her reply.

And after doing so, here I am writing this note so I can now share it with you.

And my advice is the same as my wife… “You need to watch it”!

No excuses.

Make time and do it. The sooner, the better.

Incidentally, Zach, the young man in this video died two days ago, on May 20, 2013.

But he left one heck of a legacy behind.

When people find out what I do, and how I make my income, they think to themselves, “I can’t imagine anything more boring than talking about mold”.

It reminds me about the old joke about watching the grass grow.

And I get it.

While I’m very passionate about what I do, and the way I get to provide value to others, I realize that most people don’t share my enthusiasm for the topic of mold.

But here’s what you need to know:

If I can do what I do, and have the kind of success I’ve had with my little mold website… anyone can.

I got an email last month from a subscriber who was completely frustrated because she didn’t have a clue how to set up a website.

She had no technical knowledge.

No HTML experience.

No web savviness (is that a word? – it is now).

And she didn’t want to have to spend a fortune with a website designer.

Since getting this email, it’s been taking up space in my mind, but every time I’d start doing some research, it seemed like I’d come up empty handed.

I was having a phone conversation with one of my clients the other night when he told me about an experience that gave both of us a great laugh.

To set the stage, I should let you know that this client (and his wife) own a business where they show existing cleaning contractors how to get into the Fire Damage Restoration business.

He’s been using Facebook to effectively reach his ideal prospect… by using some marketing strategies that are controversial to say the least.

Here’s one of his recent posts:

This is how we roll . We don’t do tests. We don’t do patches. We do real. We do hands on.we do before . We do during. And we do after your class .We support your success . We do on going support. We do personal training. We do on site on the job training with you and your crew at your location.we do it all for your success!

This particular Facebook post hits a chord with people in the cleaning industry because there’s a well known organization in that industry who’s been providing classroom training for years.

At the end of the training, assuming you get a passing score, they issue you a certificate, a certification card and a nice little embroidered patch to have sewn on the arm of your work shirt.

Problem is…

All you’ve had is in class book training, with no real on the job training or experience at all.

And you’re certainly not prepared to go into someone’s home and do an adequate job of cleaning their valuable belongings.

My client, on the other hand, provides hands on training in a live environment.

The kind of training you can’t get anywhere else.

And needless to say, he’s ruffling a few feathers.

After his recent Facebook post above, someone got angry with him, saying that he was “cash motivated”.

As soon as he began telling me about this, we both had a good laugh.

After all, who isn’t “cash motivated”.

Though I’ve never done it myself, all you have to do is look at the morning commute traffic every work day.

The freeways across this country in every major city are gridlocked every morning and every afternoon… by millions and millions of people who are “cash motivated”.

I mean seriously, if all those people weren’t cash motivated, there’d be no such thing as gridlock.

You’d be able to cruise along our highways and byways at the posted speed limit at any hour of the day if there weren’t so many people who were cash motivated.

I don’t know about you, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a confession…

YES – I am definitely cash motivated, and I hope you are too.

If you’re not making the kind of income you like, and not providing for your family in a way that makes you feel great, then by gosh, you’d better take matters into your own hands, and figure out a way to get the cash you need.

But realize this…

The only way you get to have an excess of cash is by providing value to other people FIRST.

Once you figure out a way to do this, you’ll never have a cashflow problem again because people will beat a path to your door, with money in hand, ready to hand it over in exchange for what you have to offer them.

So let me ask you…

One of my good friends, Michael Fishman, runs a private, invitation-only event each year called “The Consumer Health Summit”.

Seats are hard to come by (there are only 60 attendees) and around $2k each. I am blessed to be on the list each year and spoke at one 3 years ago.

And Michael ALWAYS fills the event. Always.

In case you didn’t know, filling a room for a live event is one of the hardest things on the planet to do – especially at a higher-ticket price and now you can see how it does it. Really “easily”.

THE LAW OF FISHMAN

michaelfishmanMichael Fishman is one of those guys that you NEVER hear a bad word about. Everyone who knows him only has good things to say. He’s humble, smart and always thinks of other people first.

Come to think of it, the same thing can be said of my other two mastermind members, Brian Kurtz and Jim Kwik (are you surrounding yourself with smart, caring and giving people?).

Ok, so back to Michael. He’s spent his entire professional career giving first. He always helps other people and never asks for anything back.

Michael and another one of my friends, Ramit Sethi, host a small monthly get-together dinner in NYC for 3-5 people who they like and think will get along. No string attached, dinner is on Ramit and Michael and it’s purely to connect people together . I went to one of the dinners and met some smart people (including Noah Kagan, the founder of AppSumo, who ended up speaking at my DotComXpo event and continues to send me completely inappropriate texts).

And Michael has marketing chops – he’s been behind the scenes are 8 and 9-figure products and promotions.

So when it was time to create the web site for his annual CHS event, I was happy to volunteer my time to help.

He wasn’t kidding when he said he wanted his site to be SIMPLE.

There would be NO launch. NO hypey copy. NO fake scarcity. He wanted to attract the right people and either people get it or they don’t.

Simply the name of the event, the time/location, contact info and a link to signup. He didn’t even have a shopping cart or merchant account – so I hooked it right into paypal. So simple.

And even with my non-techie skills, I was up for the challenge.

We met at Barnes and Noble, I opened up OptimizePress, and created his page in less than 6 minutes flat. Seriously, that was his entire “sales funnel”.

An email to some people in his network and BOOM! – the event sold-out yet again.

BUT RYAN????

Now, here’s the part where all of the naysayers start saying, “well Ryan, Michael already had a network of people” or “well Ryan, Michael already has a good reputation in his industry”.

And my reply is EXACTLY.

Michael Fishman focuses on the RIGHT things. He focuses on PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIPS, not tricks or loopholes. And he’s done it for years – never concerned about people paying him back. There ain’t no google loophole big enough to get people to like and trust you.

And because of him focusing on people and giving first, he is able to fill-up a big-ticket event in a matter of days WITHOUT sales copy (heck, he didn’t even have a headline), WITHOUT a launch, WITHOUT a webinar, WITHOUT advertising… just one page with a paypal link.

Get your head straight on focus on the right things, will ya?

Ever make one of those mistakes, and look back on it later… wondering what in the heck you were thinking?

I mean really…

Sometimes we make colossal mistakes that didn’t seem like any big deal at the time, but in hindsight, we should have known better.

As entrepreneurs we make plenty of mistakes. Heck, that’s part of the game.

I’m going to tell you about one of my “biggies” right now, and in the process, I’ll attempt to make you feel REALLY good about any mistakes you’ve made, because they’re probably smaller than this one.

For a 4-week period back in 2008, I held a series of teleseminars and webinars where I was introducing several different guest experts to my subscribers (of which you’re now one).

I can’t remember the specific guest experts at this point, but what I do recall is this…

The entire 4-week series was a big success,

Though the guests I hosted these events with had a wide range of topics they were experts on, my subscribers got a ton of value from what I was doing.

Sure, a small number of people complained, but the overwhelming response was fantastic.

Most people got so much value, that come the 5th week (when I didn’t have an event I was promoting) I was inundated by emails from subscribers who thought they might have missed something.

They were asking me who the guest expert was for this 5th week, and I simply replied to let them know that I didn’t have a guest expert event planned.

Then…

To make matters worse, I never did anything like that again.

I let the small number of people who complained, dictate how I interacted with everyone else.

And it’s only been until recently that I discovered how much of a disservice this has been to you.

In essence, I’ve been depriving you of a ton of value that I could’ve easily offered, if I hadn’t been so fearful of ruffling a small number of feathers.

You see, I never wanted to be the guy who was constantly trying to sell anything and everything under the sun to his subscribers.

I never wanted to be the guy who sends email after email, day in and day out, trying to sell you on the next wiz-bang gizmo-schmizmo that’s going to turn you into an overnight millionaire.

I never wanted to be the guy who doesn’t care about his subscribers at all, but will pitch anything at all if he thinks he can make a buck doing it.

I NEVER wanted to be “that guy”.

But, in my attempt to not be “that guy” I turned 100% in the other direction… to the point of hardly letting you know about anything – even though I know it could be transformational for your life.

For the last 5 years, I’ve been investing heavily in my own education, and in the process becoming close personal friends with some of the biggest thought leaders of our time.

Some of the people I’ve got to meet or spend time with are people like Richard Branson, Steve Forbes, Arianna Huffington, Chris Attwood, Glen and Natalie Ledwell, Loral Langemeier, Brendon Burchard and Dean Graziosi to name a few.

You may recognize some of these names, you may recognize all of these names, or you may recognize every one of these names, but I can tell you this…

Every one of these individuals are extremely successful business owners or entrepreneurs who have incredible value to offer.

And this is only a very short list of the people I know, and can introduce you to.

No, I’m not saying that to brag.

Far from it.

I’m sharing this to apologize for one of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made, and make amends for it.

In addition to meeting so many incredible entrepreneurs and business owners, I’ve also discovered that my other gift is being a “connector”.

Over the last year or so, I’ve been connecting key people in my life (who didn’t previously know each other) and amazing things have come from this.

And let me tell you, it sure does make a guy feel good, to know that he was the guy in the middle that totally hooked two people up and completely altered the course of both their lives.

So…

With that being said, I’m going to take of my gloves and get down to business, doing what I do best, which is continuing to mentor and teach you in my own unique way, but I’m also going to be connecting you with people and resources that I know you’ll find valuable.

I’m going to become YOUR “connector”.

You’ve already seen me doing a bit of this lately, when I shared that incredible video from Joe Polish with you and introduced you to Natalie, Glen and Ryan over at Mind Movies, as well as my friend Joshua Shafran.

Every single one of us possesses a natural and unique ability.

A God-given talent if you will.

A gift that comes so easily to us, that we mistakenly go through life thinking it’s no big deal at all.

In fact, our natural ability comes so easily to us, and seems so natural, that we think to ourselves, “Oh, that’s not really a big deal, anyone can do that”.

Yet the truth is, NO ONE ELSE can do this thing that you do so easily, in the way that you do it.

You’re the only one on the face of this planet who is able to do it.

To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, I’ll share an example from my own life.

Back in 1999, in a moment of frustration, I sat at my office desk, took out a piece of paper, and began to write what I wanted to be true of my business and my life.

There were many things that made the list. Things like:

I no longer work evenings or weekends.

I only work 40 hours a week or less.

I use my business to make a real difference in people’s lives.

I get great satisfaction from the work I did.

I have plenty of time to spend with family and friends.

I get to work with inspiring people and partners through my business.

Today, every one of the items on that list has become a reality in my life.

But little did I know at the time how powerful of a force the final item “I get to work with inspiring people and partners through my business” would be.

Nor did I realize that by writing this item down, I was about to uncover my own unique and natural ability.

As I soon would discover, I love spending time with, becoming friends with and learning from truly inspiring people.

For me, that’s the end game in life.

To some people, this might seem like an exercise in pain, because they’re not into networking, don’t enjoy going out and meeting new people, and prefer to stay more to themselves.

And that’s totally fine.

Suffice it to say, that this would not be your unique and natural ability.

But make no doubt about it, you DO HAVE a unique an natural ability.

Today, I’m in hog heaven when I get to go to events, seminars and mastermind groups where I get to spend time with successful and inspiring people.

And if that weren’t enough, I’ve discovered two additional components to this.

I’m also a natural connector and teacher.

And today, I’ve built my business so that it allows me to spend the majority of my time working in my unique and natural ability.

By doing so, I get to provide value to others in a way that only I can, and YOU are the direct beneficiary of that.

Because of the relationship you and I have, and the fact that I’m personal friends with some of the most successful business people on the planet, I have the privilege of connecting you with these A-List players in business.

And for me, there’s nothing better than knowing that I’ve become a conduit for so many incredible people.

As we continue moving forward, I’m going to take my own unique and natural ability to a whole new level by making some incredible connections for you.

And as I continue to work in this way, notice how little effort is takes.

This is because I’m working inside of my unique and natural ability.

My friends and clients, Kevin and Annissa Coy, are about to get some serious publicity by being featured on National Geographic’s Doomsday Preppers television show.

Knowing what kind of show this is, it’s a bit of a risky move, but that’s alright… because that’s what we serious business owners and marketers do… we take calculated risks.

At this point, National Geographic hasn’t even released the film trailers, yet the conversation on their website about this episode is already in full swing.

In less than 48 hours, since National Geographic made a brief introduction of Kevin on their Facebook page, there’s already 123 posts, and like said, no film trailers have been released, the episode hasn’t aired, and really, nothing has happened other than the quick introduction.

Now, here’s where this starts to get REALLY interesting. Kevin has a business where he’s an expert on several different topics, and one of those topics is how to build a tiny house.

Since Kevin’s major topic is tiny houses, and one of the audiences most interested in what he has to offer are survivalists and preppers, you can understand why Kevin would want to get on National Geographic’s Doomsday Preppers show.

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the show, but there’s some inherent risk that comes with linking yourself to a television show like this.

You run the risk of having the producers portray you in a different light that you’d want to be portrayed, because at the end of the day, for the producer, it’s all about ratings.

But, by taking matters into their own hands, Kevin and Annissa can leverage this opportunity for years and years to come, and make millions from it.

They’re already taking steps to leverage it in the way they want it to go, and have been doing so long before their episode even aired.

I happen to know that they’ve already made contact with a publication called Mother Earth News, and once this publisher discovered the Coys were going to be featured on Doomsday Preppers, they immediately asked Kevin to provide content for them as well.

As soon as Kevin shared this with me, I immediately suggested that he reach out to The Huffington Post and other major publications as well, offering to provide content for their readers.

Let’s take a close look at what Kevin and Annissa have already done, so we can learn from it.

1. They got the attention of National Geographic, and in specific, the Doomsday Prepper producers by letting them know that they had something to offer to the already ongoing dialog of the show.

2. More importantly, they clearly understood that the people who watch this show are also the people who are most likely to become customers and clients for what their business has to offer.

3. They began leveraging this publicity BEFORE it even happened.

4. They used the publicity, once again, BEFORE it even happened, to leverage their authority with other major publishers.

Keep in mind, this is what they did BEFORE anyone has seen their episode on the television show, and BEFORE anyone has seen so much as a trailer for the episode.

They’ve also got an in-depth strategy plan for what they’ll do after they’ve gained the notoriety and publicity that comes from being on the Doomsday Preppers episode.

And make no doubt about it, being on the episode itself is one small piece of the big overall strategy.

Their segment is 20-30 minutes in length, and yes, it puts them on national television, but once it’s over, it’s over.

It’s what Kevin and Annissa do with this publicity, both before and afterwards that makes all the difference in the world.

And like I said, they’ll be able to leverage this free publicity for years and years to come.

If you take the time to go to the Doomsday Prepper Facebook page, you’ll notice that some of the comments there are coming from his existing clients and subscribers, who he’s now built huge credibility with, simply because of his association with the show.

He’s also used this credibility (without the show even airing yet) to get the attention of the publishers at Mother Earth News and will no doubt use it to get the attention of other major publishers.

Because he’s now got a relationship with these other major publishers, he’ll be able to provide content for them on an ongoing basis, and every time he does, they’ll give him credit for the content, along with a direct link to his website… all at no charge.

I want to give a HUGE public congratulation to Kevin and Annissa for what they’ve done here.
