Stuck In Airport Limbo

This story will prove the point that price is not always the most important factor when making a buying decision.

Lisa was up at 4:00 Tuesday morning so she could make the 8-hour round trip and rescue our oldest son Jerry from the Portland airport.

He and his friend Chris went to Las Vegas over the Holidays, and on their way home, they got stuck in airport limbo land for 3 days.

Last Thursday, they were on Cloud 9 as they boarded the Southwest Airlines flight to Vegas.

What made this trip extra special was the fact that they’d got a couple of “buddy pass” tickets at no charge, courtesy of Jerry’s aunt, who works for Southwest.

Everything seemed great on the surface, and the guys had a great time in Vegas.

But…

On Saturday evening, when it came time to fly home, things started to get ugly.

The “no cost” airline tickets they got only allowed them to fly stand-by.

Meaning that, you can only get on the plane if there’s available seats.

As you can imagine, the flights were completely full, as everyone was exiting Las Vegas, and returning back home after the holidays.

Jerry and Chris spent the night at the airport, hoping to catch a flight on Sunday.

Morning came, and went.

They didn’t get out.

Afternoon came, and went.

They didn’t get out.

Finally, in the evening, they were able to get on a flight.

Only challenge… it was talking them to Sacramento.

But hey, at least that’s a little closer to home.

Upon arriving in Sacramento, they were faced with a similar situation – no open seats.

Once again, they spent the night in the airport, hoping to catch a flight home on Monday.

They spent the entire day in the airport, with no luck.

The last flight heading north for the day was at 8:20pm.

They were hoping to get on that flight, but it didn’t happen.

Once again, they had to stay the night at the airport.

They were finally able to catch the 7:00am flight on Tuesday, but it would only take them to Portland, which is about 230 miles away from us.

Rather than deal with this anymore, Lisa and I decided it best to make the drive to Portland, and pick the boys up.

I have to say though, they had a pretty good attitude throughout the whole experience.

But even at that, neither of them are excited about flying on a “buddy pass” again.

At least not during a busy holiday time.

When you consider the fact that each of the boys lost a couple days of work, and you take into account the time and expense of driving to Portland and back, it makes you realize that simply paying for the tickets would have been a much better deal.

I realize there’s nothing you can do to change the facts.

There’s a small amount of the population who makes EVERY buying decision based on price.

For these people, the cheaper, the better.

But people like you and I would rather get value in return for what we spend.

Value is described as, “What I’m getting in return, is worth more to me than the price I’m paying to get it”.

And as long as we get this value, we’re happy.

We feel like we got a great deal, and we should.

We DID get a great deal.

I look at every buying decision this way.

By asking myself, “Is what I’m getting, worth more to me than the price I’m paying to get it”?

If the answer is no, I don’t make the investment.

But…

If the answer is yes, I move forward immediately, without any hesitation.

This way of thinking has served me extremely well over the years, and it will do the same for you.

“Without a Travel Agent you are on your own”
I would have suggested a low cost Amtrak ticket
or cheap flight to Seattle to save poor Lisa all
    the hassle… :-)
